Dress Code

Consistent wearing of school uniform has several benefits

  1. School identity – encouraging a sense of belonging and pride in the school
  2. Equality – ensuring all students are included and equal in standing
  3. Safety and security – being able to identify intruders, enabling easy identification of groups while on excursions, providing adequate WHS protection in practical subjects and in the yard
  4. Creating a workplace atmosphere, as distinct from a leisure or home atmosphere

EVERYDAY UNIFORM

  • Summer tunic (Blue/white/gold check shirt-dress with short sleeves)
  • T-shirt (Style “Paterson”) – two colour options navy with white trim or white with navy trim, embroidered with the school BHS logo and the words Balaklava High School
  • Navy blue bomber jacket, zip front, sky blue sleeves, embroidered with the school BHS logo and the words Balaklava High School
  • Plain navy blue rugby jumper with white collar, embroidered with the school BHS logo and the words Balaklava High School
  • Plain navy blue hoodie, embroidered with the school BHS logo and the words Balaklava High School
  • Plain navy blue spray jacket with the school logo and the words Balaklava High School
  • Plain navy blue or grey shorts, mid length, no sports stripes or large logos
  • Plain navy blue or grey school trousers
  • Plain navy blue track pants, no sports stripes or large logos

FORMAL / PERFORMANCE UNIFORM

  • White, long sleeved button up dress shirt (Not fitted or shaped, or patterned)
  • School Tie (available to purchase or borrow from school)
  • Navy wool jumper
  • School Blazer (worn by Student Council Executive and for special events only available for hire through BHS)
  • Kilt (available to purchase or hire from school)
  • Black opaque tights
  • Black dress trousers
  • Black socks
  • Black lace up shoes

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

All students are required to change clothing for PE

  • Sandshoes (non-marking white soles)
  • Casual clothing (no inappropriate design on front or back)
  • No sleeveless tops for outdoor sport (in Term 1 and 4)
  • Practical PE shirt available from TADS

REPRESENTATIVE ATHLETICS UNIFORM

  • Tops supplied by school with blue shorts

IN COLD WEATHER

  • Extra layers can be added underneath the school uniform. If visible, they must be in the colours of navy or white. Non-school dress code hoodies are not allowed as layers.
  • Scarves and beanies must also be in the colours of navy or white.

HATS

  • As per the Balaklava High School “Sunsmart” Policy

SHOES

  • Plain leather school shoes or lace-up sports shoes that completely cover and protect the foot, in line with the Balaklava High School WHS policy

SPECIAL TOPS

If special tops are arranged for events such as the Ski Trip or Canberra trip, the main colour selected will not be navy or sky blue and these tops will not be allowed as school uniform.

YEAR 12 TOPS

Year 12 students may choose to select a t-shirt and/or jumper of a different design, using the school colours of navy, sky blue or white. These will be selected from standard “off the books” designs to keep prices reasonable.

UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS

  • Denim of any sort
  • Leggings
  • Black clothing
  • Excessive jewellery or makeup
  • Unsuitable or unsafe shoes
  • Non-uniform items

NON-DRESS CODE DAYS (CASUAL DAYS)

  • Students must comply with the “Sunsmart” Policy
  • Students must wear clean, smart casual clothes
  • Offensive or revealing clothing is not acceptable
  • Students must wear closed in covered shoes and not thongs, sandals or uggboots etc.

DRESS CODE NON-COMPLIANCE

Encouraging positive reinforcement and responsible behaviour is the preferred approach to ensuring that all students comply with the school’s dress code. A range of actions for non-compliance of the school dress code will include:

  • Homegroup and classroom teachers speaking to student to encourage him / her to observe the dress code
  • Verbal warnings to student and negotiation with student and parents re possible action
  • Homegroup teacher will contact parents via diary note, phone call, email or letter home
  • A diary note signed and dated by parents is required for any uniform non-compliance
  • Loss of access / involvement in extra-curricular activities
  • Spare uniform being offered for students not complying with the dress code
  • Periodic dress code blitzes will occur. Students and parents will be notified prior to the blitz. During these periods lunch time detention may be enforced for any dress code non-compliance.
